InDesign Level 2: Long Documents and Interactive Publishing

A four-page leaflet and a two-hundred-page manual are different jobs. The leaflet is a layout problem. The manual is a structure problem: chapters that have to renumber when one is inserted, a contents page that has to regenerate rather than be retyped, cross-references that still point at the right figure after the text reflows, and an index somebody will actually use. This course is about that second job, and about getting more than one deliverable out of the file once it is built.

You work on a supplied technical manual of roughly sixty pages, split into chapters. Day one assembles it as a book file, with synchronised styles, running heads driven by text variables rather than typed by hand, and continuous page numbering across chapters. The afternoon builds the apparatus that makes a long document navigable: a generated table of contents, index entries and a compiled index, cross-references, footnotes and endnotes, and figure numbering that renumbers itself.

Day two is production speed and output. You use GREP styles and GREP find and change to fix in one pass the typographic problems that would otherwise take an afternoon, run a data merge from a CSV, and set up conditional text so that one file produces both the customer version and the internal version. The final session takes the same layout out three ways: a reflowable EPUB with sensible export order and metadata, an interactive PDF with hyperlinks, bookmarks, buttons and a fillable form, and a tagged accessible PDF with alt text, table headers and a reading order a screen reader can follow.

This course goes past the published objectives of the Adobe Certified Professional in Adobe InDesign exam rather than mapping to them. If the certification is your goal, InDesign Level 1 is the course built against those objectives, and this one is what you take afterwards to work faster on real documents. As always, we prepare you for the exam, we do not award the certification, and no course can guarantee a pass.

Bring a document of your own that is fighting you. There is time on the second afternoon to look at real files, and long-document problems are usually structural, which means they are usually fixable.

MyLearnPlus Adobe Faculty

Adobe Certified Professionals teaching the Creative Cloud track

The Creative Cloud track is taught by a small pool of practising designers, retouchers, editors and production artists rather than by one trainer with a broad brochure. Everyone who teaches on this track has to meet the same standard before they take a class: a current Adobe Certified Professional credential in the application they teach, obtained through Certiport in the same way we tell learners to obtain theirs, and recent production experience in a studio, agency or in-house team. Teaching Photoshop here means you still retouch files for clients. Teaching InDesign means you still send documents to print and deal with what comes back. Instructors work on the current Creative Cloud release, and they are expected to know the published exam objectives for the courses that prepare learners for an Adobe exam.

Classes are staffed one instructor per cohort, and the instructor for your date is named in your joining instructions before the course starts. A new instructor teaches the MyLearnPlus syllabus under observation before running it alone, so the exercise files, the workbook and the sequence of a day are the same whoever is in front of you. Large private cohorts are staffed with a second assisting instructor so that nobody waits with a hand up, and hybrid sessions with remote joiners are run with someone watching the online room. If an instructor has to be replaced at short notice the substitute teaches the same syllabus from the same materials, and we tell you before the day rather than on it.

How do I know whether this is the right level for me?
If you can set up a document, build parent pages, thread text and apply paragraph styles without needing to be talked through it, you are ready. If any of that is unfamiliar, take InDesign Level 1 first, because day one moves straight into book files and text variables and assumes the basics are automatic. If you are not sure, send us a description of the last document you built and we will tell you honestly which course to book.
Can I bring my own document and work on it?
Yes, and it makes the two days considerably more useful. The last session of the second afternoon is set aside for real files. Long-document problems are usually structural rather than cosmetic, so bring the packaged folder with fonts and links if you can, and tell your instructor at the start of day one what is going wrong.
Do I need my own laptop, and is the software included?
For live online classes you work on your own machine with InDesign 2024 or later installed, and you keep every file you build. For classroom sessions in Colombo a workstation with InDesign is provided. The Adobe subscription is not included in the fee and we do not resell licences, although Adobe offers a free trial that covers the two days and your employer may already hold licences you can be added to.
Does this course prepare me for an Adobe certification?
Not directly. The Adobe Certified Professional in Adobe InDesign exam is aligned to InDesign Level 1, which is the course built against the published objectives. This course deliberately goes past them into book files, indexing, EPUB and forms. The exam is booked and sat through a Certiport testing centre. If you go on to complete a second related professional certification, Adobe awards a Specialty Credential.
What happens if I miss a day?
Every live session is recorded and the recording stays available for 12 months, so you can catch up in your own time. If you would rather sit the session again live you can join that half day with a later cohort at no cost, subject to seats, and your free repeat of the full course still stands.
Will the EPUB I export be good enough to sell?
For a text-led book, yes: the session covers export order, style mapping, metadata and cover, which is what retailers check. For a heavily designed layout, a reflowable EPUB will never look like the print page, and we spend time on that trade-off so you can advise a client rather than promise something the format cannot do. Fixed-layout EPUB is demonstrated and its limitations explained.
Can my employer be invoiced, and can we run this privately?
Yes. Organisations in Sri Lanka are invoiced in LKR and organisations elsewhere in USD, and we can issue a pro forma invoice against your purchase order before the class. For a team of four or more, private delivery is usually better value and lets us rebuild the exercises around your own manual, your house styles and your own output requirements.
