Illustrator is the tool you reach for when artwork has to stay sharp at any size: a logo that goes on a business card and on a hoarding, an icon set that has to read at 24 pixels, a map, a label, a diagram. This two-day course teaches the drawing, colour and type skills that sit underneath all of that, in the order a working designer needs them.

Day one begins with document setup, because most of the problems that reach a printer start with a badly set up file. You then spend a long session on the Pen tool. It is the part of Illustrator people avoid, and the part that decides whether artwork looks drawn or looks assembled. By the end of the first day you will have traced a supplied sketch into a finished icon and built a six-icon set that aligns on a shared grid.

Day two moves to colour, type and output. You will construct a wordmark, learn why global swatches let you recolour an entire design by editing one chip, place and trace images, and assemble a one-page A4 flyer with bleed and trim marks. The final session is the one clients care about: exporting SVG, PDF/X-4 and PNG, knowing which to send where, and packaging a job so the printer receives the fonts and links along with the artwork.

The syllabus maps to the published exam objectives for the Adobe Certified Professional in Adobe Illustrator, which is delivered through Certiport. We prepare you for that exam. We do not award the certification, and no course can guarantee a pass. If certification is your reason for attending, say so on day one and your instructor will flag which sessions sit directly on the exam objectives.

You work on the same practice brief throughout, so the icon set, the wordmark and the flyer belong to one fictional client rather than to three unrelated exercises. You keep every file you produce.

Day 1, Morning — Documents, shapes and the Illustrator way of working

Set files up correctly, then build accurate artwork out of primitive shapes.

MyLearnPlus Adobe Faculty

Adobe Certified Professionals teaching the Creative Cloud track

The Creative Cloud track is taught by a small pool of practising designers, retouchers, editors and production artists rather than by one trainer with a broad brochure. Everyone who teaches on this track has to meet the same standard before they take a class: a current Adobe Certified Professional credential in the application they teach, obtained through Certiport in the same way we tell learners to obtain theirs, and recent production experience in a studio, agency or in-house team. Teaching Photoshop here means you still retouch files for clients. Teaching InDesign means you still send documents to print and deal with what comes back. Instructors work on the current Creative Cloud release, and they are expected to know the published exam objectives for the courses that prepare learners for an Adobe exam.

Classes are staffed one instructor per cohort, and the instructor for your date is named in your joining instructions before the course starts. A new instructor teaches the MyLearnPlus syllabus under observation before running it alone, so the exercise files, the workbook and the sequence of a day are the same whoever is in front of you. Large private cohorts are staffed with a second assisting instructor so that nobody waits with a hand up, and hybrid sessions with remote joiners are run with someone watching the online room. If an instructor has to be replaced at short notice the substitute teaches the same syllabus from the same materials, and we tell you before the day rather than on it.

Do I need my own laptop?
For live online classes, yes. You work on your own machine with Illustrator already installed, and you keep every file you make. For classroom sessions in Colombo a workstation with Illustrator is provided, although you are welcome to bring your own laptop if you would rather work on the setup you use at your desk. We send system requirements and a setup check about a week before the class.
Is the Adobe software included in the price?
No. Illustrator is a subscription from Adobe and we do not resell licences. If you do not have one, Adobe offers a free trial that is long enough to cover the two days, and your employer may already hold licences you can be added to. Classroom seats in Colombo come with the software installed on the machine.
What happens if I miss a day?
Every live session is recorded and the recording stays available to you for 12 months, so you can catch up in your own time. If you would rather sit the session again live, you can join the same half day in a later cohort at no cost, subject to seats being available.
Do you issue a certificate?
Yes. You receive a MyLearnPlus certificate of completion, issued by Livezen Technologies, naming the course, the version of Illustrator taught and the hours completed. That is a record of training, not an Adobe qualification. The Adobe Certified Professional certification is a separate exam sat through Certiport.
Does this course prepare me for the Adobe Certified Professional exam?
It covers a large part of the published objectives for the Adobe Certified Professional in Adobe Illustrator exam, and your instructor will point out which sessions map to them. The exam itself is booked and sat through a Certiport testing centre and is not included in the course fee. We cannot guarantee a pass. If you go on to complete a second related professional certification, Adobe awards a Specialty Credential such as Visual Design.
Is there a free retake?
Yes. You may repeat the same class once within 12 months at no charge, in whichever delivery mode suits you at the time, subject to available seats. People usually use it six to eight weeks later, once they have hit real work and know which parts they want to sit through again.
