Web Design with WordPress

For beginners building their first site. Leave with a five-page WordPress site you built

මෙම පාඨමාලාව ගැන

Anyone can install WordPress in ten minutes. The difficulty starts afterwards, when the theme looks nothing like the demo, the header cannot be edited, the contact form quietly stops delivering mail, and nobody can remember which of the twenty-two installed plugins is the one breaking the layout. This course is two days of building a site properly, in the order a professional builds one, so that the site you end up with can be handed to its owner and left running.

You build one site across the two days: a five-page website for a small business, supplied as a brief with written copy and photographs. Home, services, about, contact and a blog. You work in the block editor and a block theme, setting colour, typography and spacing once in the Site Editor so the whole site follows, editing the header and footer as template parts rather than fighting a theme options panel, and building sections as patterns you can reuse on the next page instead of pasting them.

The second day is the part that decides whether a site survives contact with the real world. You install and configure a contact form and confirm that mail actually arrives, size and compress images so pages are not thirty megabytes of holiday photographs, write titles and meta descriptions, submit a sitemap to Google Search Console, set up scheduled backups and user roles, and then work through a written pre-launch checklist: DNS, HTTPS, search visibility, forms tested, broken links and redirects. You finish by writing the handover note the site owner needs in order to update their own site without breaking it.

No coding is required and none is assumed. A small amount of CSS is shown so you know where it goes and when it is the right answer, but every exercise can be completed without writing any. You do not need to buy hosting or a domain to attend: a practice environment is provided, and if you already have a site or a domain in hand you are welcome to work on that instead.

Classes run live online in your own timezone or in the classroom in Colombo, with the recording available for twelve months. Pricing is shown in LKR for learners in Sri Lanka and in USD for everyone else. Organisations can be invoiced against a purchase order, and the same syllabus can be run privately for a team, building your own site rather than the practice one.

ඔබට කළ හැකි වන දේ

  • Explain the difference between WordPress.com and self-hosted WordPress, and what a domain, hosting and the database each do.
  • Install WordPress on a local or staging environment and configure the settings that matter on day one, including permalinks.
  • Choose and install a block theme, then set the colour palette, typography and spacing in the Site Editor so the whole site changes from one place.
  • Edit templates and template parts, including the header, footer, page template and single post template.
  • Build the five pages of a supplied brief from blocks and patterns, reusing sections instead of rebuilding them.
  • Set up a blog with posts, categories, an archive and a single post layout.
  • Build a navigation menu and a contact form, and confirm that submissions are delivered to a real inbox.
  • Prepare images at the right size and format, add alt text, and measure the effect on page weight and load time.
  • Write page titles, meta descriptions and slugs, submit a sitemap to Google Search Console and check what has been indexed.
  • Configure scheduled backups, updates and user roles, then work through a written launch checklist and a handover note for the site owner.

කලින් ඔබට අවශ්‍ය දේ

  • No prior experience with WordPress, web design or coding is needed.
  • You should be comfortable with your own computer: browsers, files and folders, and installing an application when asked to.
  • You do not need to buy hosting or a domain for this course, though you are welcome to work on your own if you already have one.

MyLearnPlus Design and Digital Faculty

Designers and digital practitioners teaching Figma, web, marketing and data visualisation

The design and digital track covers Figma and UI/UX, web design with WordPress, digital marketing analytics, and presentation and data visualisation. These are craft subjects with live consequences, so the standard for teaching them is current practice rather than a qualification. Whoever teaches the Figma course ships interface work that developers build from. Whoever teaches WordPress maintains sites that real visitors use and real clients complain about. Whoever teaches analytics reads the reports for a business that spends money on the basis of them, and whoever teaches data visualisation has had to defend a chart to someone who disagreed with it. Instructors bring their own worked examples into class alongside the standard exercise files, which is why two cohorts of the same course are never quite identical in the anecdotes, only in the syllabus.

Staffing works the same way across the whole school. One instructor is assigned per cohort and named in your joining instructions before the course starts. New instructors teach the MyLearnPlus syllabus under observation before running a cohort alone, so the exercise files, the workbook and the structure of a day do not depend on who turns up. Private and in-company groups can be staffed with a second assisting instructor, and any substitution is notified in advance and taught from the same materials.

මිනිසුන් අසන ප්‍රශ්න

Do I need my own laptop?
For live online classes, yes: the site you build lives on your machine or your staging space, and you keep working on it after the course. For classroom sessions in Colombo we recommend bringing your own laptop for the same reason. Tell us when you book if you cannot, and we will confirm what is available for your date.
Do I have to buy hosting and a domain before the class?
No. A practice environment is provided so you can build the whole site without spending anything on hosting, and day one covers how to install WordPress locally on your own machine. If you already have hosting and a domain, or you are building a site for a real client, bring the details and work on that instead; the instructor will help you get the install ready during the first session.
Do I need to know how to code?
No. Everything in the two days can be completed without writing a line of HTML, CSS or PHP. A small amount of CSS is shown so you recognise it, know where it belongs and can tell when it is the right answer rather than a plugin, but no exercise depends on it. If you want to go further into code, that is a different course.
Do you teach Elementor, Divi or another page builder?
The course is taught in the built-in block editor with a block theme, because it is free, works on any host and does not tie a client's site to a licence they may stop paying for. The concepts you learn transfer directly: sections, columns, spacing, reusable patterns and templates all exist in the commercial builders under different names. If your team has already standardised on a particular builder, a private run can be taught in that instead.
Will my site rank on Google after this course?
No course can promise a ranking, and anyone who does is selling you something. What you will do is the work that makes ranking possible: readable titles and meta descriptions, sensible slugs and headings, a site that loads quickly on a phone, a submitted sitemap and a Search Console account showing what Google has actually indexed. Ongoing search and advertising work is covered in Digital Marketing and Analytics.
What happens if I miss a day, and do you issue a certificate?
Every session is recorded and available to you for twelve months, and each live booking includes one free repeat of the same class, with the terms shown on the booking page for the date. You receive a MyLearnPlus certificate of completion recording the course title, the hours and the date. It is a record of training rather than an industry credential; WordPress itself does not issue one.
Can my employer be invoiced?
Yes. We invoice organisations against a purchase order, in LKR for Sri Lankan companies and in USD internationally. Send the billing details and the names of the people attending and we will hold the seats while the invoice is processed. Groups of five or more are usually better served by a private class in which the team builds the organisation's own site rather than the practice project.
