One day on portrait and product retouching that holds up at full print resolution

Retouching goes wrong in a predictable way. The blemishes disappear, the skin turns to plastic, the eyes get whitened past belief, and at full print resolution the whole face reads as a mask. This course teaches the opposite approach: work that survives a 100 per cent zoom because texture was never destroyed in the first place.

The day starts with reading the image. Before any tool is picked up you learn to decide what to fix, what to leave and what belongs in the raw processing stage rather than the retouch. You then build a proper retouching stack: cleanup on its own layer, frequency separation for tone and texture, dodge and burn on a neutral grey layer for shaping, and grading on top. Each stage stays separate, so a client asking for less can be given less without starting again.

The second half moves to compositing. You cut a subject out using channels and Select and Mask, then do the work that actually sells the result: matching light direction and colour, adding grain so the two sources share the same noise, treating the edge so it does not glow, and painting shadows that put the subject on the ground. You finish with sharpening for a named output, a client-ready export and a layered file tidy enough to hand to someone else.

This is a practical day with two full projects: a portrait taken through to a finished, believable retouch, and a subject composited into a new scene. Both files are yours to keep, along with the class recording for twelve months. It runs live online or in the classroom in Colombo, with pricing in LKR for Sri Lanka and USD internationally.

The class assumes real fluency in Photoshop. If channels, curves and smart objects are not yet second nature, take Photoshop Level 2 first.

  • Sharpen for a named output and export a client-ready file alongside a tidy, labelled layered master.

Module 1 — Reading the image and setting up

Adobe Certified Professionals teaching the Creative Cloud track

The Creative Cloud track is taught by a small pool of practising designers, retouchers, editors and production artists rather than by one trainer with a broad brochure. Everyone who teaches on this track has to meet the same standard before they take a class: a current Adobe Certified Professional credential in the application they teach, obtained through Certiport in the same way we tell learners to obtain theirs, and recent production experience in a studio, agency or in-house team. Teaching Photoshop here means you still retouch files for clients. Teaching InDesign means you still send documents to print and deal with what comes back. Instructors work on the current Creative Cloud release, and they are expected to know the published exam objectives for the courses that prepare learners for an Adobe exam.

Classes are staffed one instructor per cohort, and the instructor for your date is named in your joining instructions before the course starts. A new instructor teaches the MyLearnPlus syllabus under observation before running it alone, so the exercise files, the workbook and the sequence of a day are the same whoever is in front of you. Large private cohorts are staffed with a second assisting instructor so that nobody waits with a hand up, and hybrid sessions with remote joiners are run with someone watching the online room. If an instructor has to be replaced at short notice the substitute teaches the same syllabus from the same materials, and we tell you before the day rather than on it.

Is one day long enough for retouching?
It is long enough to learn the method and complete two projects, because the day assumes you already know Photoshop and spends no time on the interface. What you take away is a repeatable stack and a set of decisions. Speed comes from repeating it on your own files afterwards, which is what the practice images and the recording are for.
Can I work on my own images in class?
Yes, and you are encouraged to. Bring one portrait and one image you want to composite, at full resolution. The taught exercises use supplied files so that everyone follows the same steps, and the final exercise in each half is open for you to apply the technique to your own work with the instructor looking over it.
Do I need my own laptop, and is the software included?
You work on your own machine, online or in the Colombo classroom, so the actions and presets you build stay with you. Photoshop itself is not included in the fee: you need a working Creative Cloud subscription or an Adobe trial before the first session. A graphics tablet is useful for dodge and burn but is not required.
What if I miss the class?
The session is recorded and available to you for twelve months, so you can work through it in your own time. If you would rather sit the day live again, live bookings include one free repeat of the same class; the terms are shown on the booking page for each date.
Do you issue a certificate?
Yes, a MyLearnPlus certificate of completion recording the course, the hours and the date. There is no Adobe Certified Professional exam specific to retouching; the Photoshop certification covers the application as a whole and is prepared for in Photoshop Level 1.
Does the course cover AI retouching tools?
It covers the Remove tool and Content-Aware Fill where they are the fastest correct choice, and the whole day is about knowing when a generated patch will not hold up at print size. Generative Fill, Generative Expand and prompt-based work are taught in depth in Photoshop AI and Generative Fill, which pairs well with this class.
Can my employer be invoiced?
Yes. We invoice organisations against a purchase order, in LKR for Sri Lankan companies and in USD internationally, and we hold seats while the invoice is processed. Studios booking several people usually prefer a private run of the day using their own photography.
